Just A Mum?

Stepping Stones North Edinburgh’s Young Parent Group, at North Edinburgh Arts (2018).

I worked with Stepping Stones North Edinburgh in 2018 and in 2019 to deliver creative projects with groups of young mums who attend their young parent groups.

“I’m just a mum” is something that they often found themselves saying. Through a number of creative workshops using a variety of mediums such as drawing, collage, spray painting and writing, I supported them to explore what this phrase really meant. What do mums do all day?

The result was a collaborative jigsaw piece artwork that aimed to show people all of the things that they did everyday as young mums, and to encourage others to appreciate and value the work of mothers.

The artwork was exhibited at North Edinburgh Arts in October 2018 for a two week exhibition.

The second group of parents I worked with in 2019 decided to create a zine titled ‘Could You Do This?’ that offered insights and advice to fellow teenagers so they could better understand the realities of being a young parent.

Below are a selection of images of the workshops I led with them. Thank you to Stepping Stones, North Edinburgh Arts and to UnLtd for funding the workshops.
