Spilt Milk

Spilt Milk is a social enterprise whose mission is to promote the work of artists who identify as mothers, and to empower mothers in the community through artist-led activities.

I founded Spilt Milk in Edinburgh in 2018 as a way of creating more accessible and inclusive opportunities for artists who were (m)others. It stemmed from my own experience as a young, working class single mother who struggled to engage with the art world, and had to navigate a number of barriers in developing my career.

Starting from humble beginnings, Spilt Milk has grown into a membership network of 250+ artists worldwide. Since 2018, we have delivered 5 large scale physical exhibitions, 8 online exhibitions and numerous online events, produced two zines, piloted a mother-friendly residency programme and developed a peer led mentoring programme. We have also collaborated with a number of organisations to deliver socially engaged community projects with local mothers.
